Memorial Day in the Nation’s Capital

On Memorial Day weekend over 400,000 people come to Washington, D.C. each year to honor and remember America’s fallen heroes. Wreathes and personal mementos are placed at the Viet Nam Wall and the Viet Nam and Korean War Memorials. At Arlington National Cemetery, the president or his representative places a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and American flags are placed at every headstone.

Working as a member of the White House press pool, Scott L. Gibson uniquely captures the people and events of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
